At a Glance
Core Principles
“The scholar's curse writes destinies in ink that cannot be erased. Every spell tells a story, every bind reveals truth, every portrait captures doom.”
Master the Labyrinth
Soulbind isn't a simple spell—it's a labyrinth of possibilities. Every enemy ability changes the equation. Study the interactions before you cast, for knowledge is your greatest weapon.
Vision is Truth
Where others see fog, you see ink. Your abilities reveal what enemies try to hide. Stroke of Fate, Phantom's Embrace, Ink Trail—each paints the battlefield in your colors.
The Third Act Twist
Ink Swell carries donkey can be more devastating than Blink daggers. The unexpected initiation breaks psychology. When they expect spellcraft, deliver donkey-craft.
Strength in Reflection
Their power becomes your tool. Soulbind turns their greatest assets into liabilities. Understand that you're not preventing their abilities—you're redirecting them with artistic precision.
Paint Perfect Portraits
Dark Portrait isn't just an illusion—it's a debuff-immune weapon. Use them to tank Tormentor, copy transformations, or create tactical diversions that capture attention while you paint the real masterpiece.
Death by Association
Grimstroke's greatest strength isn't direct damage—it's making enemies destroy themselves. Every Soulbind, every reflected ability, every mistake amplified through ink. You are the conductor of their symphony of errors.
Hero Overview
Grimstroke is a cerebral support specialist who excels at psychological warfare and ability combinations. His unique spell interactions through Soulbind can multiply enemy mistakes exponentially, turning single-target abilities into devastating AoE nightmares. The scholar's cursed ink creates both vision control and death traps that punish positioning errors with brutal efficiency.
Grimstroke's gameplay revolves around reading enemy abilities and using Soulbind to turn their own power against them. A well-timed Soulbind can cause Legion Commander to 2v1 herself, or make Kunkka's X mark both enemies. His combo potential is nearly limitless when combined with heroes like Axe, Magnus, or Enigma. Phantom's Embrace provides crucial vision and LHK interaction, while Ink Swell offers surprising initiation potential through couriers or neutrals.

Ability Analysis

Stroke of Fate
ActiveGrimstroke paints a path of ink that damages enemies and applies lingering vision wherever it ends.
Notes: Provides vision while traveling and 2 seconds of vision at the end. Can be curved through neutral camps to build damage before hitting enemies. Use innate Ink Trail vision to help aim noscope shots on revealed targets.

Phantom's Embrace
Target UnitGrimstroke commands a phantom to latch onto an enemy unit, attacking them and silencing for 3 seconds. The phantom dies if it takes 3 attacks or the duration ends.
Notes: Pops Linken's on cast, provides shared vision while flying. When attached to enemies in Chronosphere, the phantom pauses mid-flight and returns with nuke damage when the Chrono ends. Cannot pass through Disruptor's Kinetic Field.

Ink Swell
Target UnitGrimstroke infuses an allied unit with ink, granting them bonus movement speed and damage over 4 seconds. The ink explodes at the end, slowing and damaging nearby enemies.
Notes: Can be cast on allies, creeps, summons, AND couriers. Courier-based initiation provides unexpected engagement angles. Works normally on banished targets but won't show particles. Enemies won't see tendrils if the target is invisible.

Soulbind
Target UnitGrimstroke binds two enemy heroes with ink, causing single-target spells cast on one to also hit the other. Bound enemies cannot use movement items or spells when out of range.
Notes: Provides truesight for bound targets. The leash can cancel TPs even through BKB if targets are bound. Cannot link to illusions or invis heroes. Links to creep-heroes like Spirit Bear or Golems work normally. Mechanics are incredibly complex - think Lotus Orb but enemies reflect spells to their bind partner.

Dark Portrait (Aghanim's Scepter)
Target UnitGrimstroke paints a Dark Portrait of an enemy hero, creating a debuff-immune illusion that takes 300% damage and deals bonus damage.
Notes: Illusions are debuff immune and can't be damaged by Tormentor reflections. Copies transformation states like Dragon Knight's dragon form or Muerta's Pierce the Veil. Can create two illusions of the same hero through Soulbind interaction: target Soulbind on illusion, link to real hero, then cast Dark Portrait on real hero.

The Ink Trail
PassiveEnemies that attack Grimstroke leave an ink trail for 3 seconds, revealing their position. The trail can be dispelled by enemies.
Notes: Grants vision on attackers for 3 seconds. Use this vision to aim perfect Stroke of Fate curves. Essential for noscope projectile accuracy and maintaining vision on high-mobility targets.

Tips & Strategies
Soulbind Mastery
- Soulbind reflects single-target spells as if you put a Lotus Orb on enemies - anything that would get reflected gets cast on the bind partner instead.
- Legion Commander gets 2v1'd in Duel, gaining damage for each kill but moving to the second target if the first dies.
- Kunkka's X marks both enemies, but Return only affects the primary target.
- Terrorblade's Sunder is messed up: primary gets secondary's HP, secondary gets TB's HP, TB gets primary's HP.
Advanced Courier Tactics
- Ink Swell on courier is incredibly effective - enemies don't expect stun from a flying donkey.
- Send Ink Swelled couriers over cliffs or unexpected angles for maximum surprise.
- Courier-based initiation works especially well against teams that think they know your engagement ranges.
- Remember: enemies won't see tendrils if the Ink Swelled target is invisible.
Vision Control Mastery
- Stroke of Fate provides vision while traveling AND 2 seconds of vision where it ends.
- Phantom's Embrace gives shared vision during flight and after attachment.
- Ink Trail reveals attackers for 3 seconds - use this for perfect noscope Stroke follows.

Counter Guide
Good With
Grimstroke thrives with heroes who have powerful single-target abilities that can be doubled through Soulbind.
Bad Against
Good Against
